Re: Edyta Ratecka, who was employed for Cardiff Council benefits department, falsely claimed more than £20,000 by failing to disclose she was living with her partner.
The 41 year old woman, was living with her partner Daniel Thomas in Cardiff while claiming housing benefit and working tax credit as a single mother.
HMRC and Cardiff council were tipped off that Ratecka was living with her partner which led to an investigation, with evidence gathered from the couple’s employers, social media accounts, and insurance documents.
When the defendant was made aware of the allegations she initially denied them but when presented with the evidence she was unable to give a reasonable explanation as to why she failed to notify the authorities of her change in circumstances.
Cardiff Crown Court heard how the offending took place between 2013 and 2016 with the total benefit overpayment coming in at £20,492.
Ratecka, of Cardiff, was sentenced to 24 weeks imprisonment suspended for 18 months and was ordered to carry out 100 hours unpaid work, complete a six-day rehabilitation activity requirement, and to pay £300.
